Our Story
Metro Report Media Ltd. was founded to address a persistent gap in British public-affairs journalism: the absence of a single, accessible, evidence-led publication dedicated entirely to the life of UK cities and the policy choices that shape them. While national newspapers cover Westminster and broad economic trends, and local papers focus on parish-council minutiae, the intermediate space — the decisions made by metro mayors, transport authorities, housing associations and municipal governments that determine how millions of people actually live, work and move — has been chronically under-served. MetroReport.uk exists to fill that space.
Our founding premise is simple: urban policy is not a niche interest. It is the daily reality for the majority of the UK population. A change to bus franchising in Greater Manchester, a new affordable-housing quota in Bristol, a safety review on the London Underground, a devolution deal in West Yorkshire — these stories affect commuters, renters, small-business owners, shift workers and families. Yet they are too often buried in specialist briefings, fragmented across local outlets or reduced to political soundbites. We believe readers deserve reporting that is thorough, transparent and grounded in evidence: data, official documents, direct testimony and expert analysis, not rumour or spin.
Our editorial philosophy
Under Editor-in-Chief & Responsible Publisher Clara Whitfield, our editorial philosophy centres on three commitments. First, independence. Editorial decisions are made by our journalists, guided by our published editorial policy and corrections policy, never by commercial or political interests. Second, rigour. Every article must meet the verification standards set by our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, Marcus Ellery, whose team reviews sources, challenges assumptions and maintains our fact-checking policy. Third, accessibility. We write for a general, curious audience — not for specialists — using clear language, context and explanation, so that a reader in Glasgow can understand housing policy in Brighton, and vice versa.
Our desk structure reflects these principles. The Managing Editor, Daniel Mercer, oversees daily news prioritisation and production. Amara Hughes, Urban Affairs Editor, leads coverage of development, housing, infrastructure, local authorities and planning. Elliot Fraser, Transport & Infrastructure Correspondent, focuses on public transport, roads, rail, commuting and regional connectivity. Sophie Kendall, Community & Public Services Editor, reports on public services, safety, education, healthcare and citizen issues. This structure ensures that each beat receives sustained, expert attention, while our editors collaborate to connect stories across disciplines. Full team biographies are available on our team page.
What readers can expect
Readers of MetroReport.uk can expect daily news, analysis, commentary and in-depth reporting on: metropolitan news and local politics; public transport and infrastructure; housing and the economy; working life and public safety; culture and current affairs in British cities. Our editorial content is reviewed by a human editor before publication, and any use of digital tools for research or formatting is subject to that review. We do not publish anonymous sources without documented justification.
