What was Tropical Storm Gabrielle?
Gabrielle formed from a tropical wave off the coast of Africa on 4 September 2023. It tracked westward across the central Atlantic, with peak sustained winds of 45 mph, before degenerating into a remnant low on 8 September. The storm was never expected to impact the UK or Europe – its entire life cycle remained far from shipping lanes and land.
Could a storm like Gabrielle hit the UK?
True tropical storms rarely reach British shores because the cool North Atlantic waters quickly rob them of energy. However, post-tropical systems – such as ex‑Hurricane Ophelia in 2017 – can bring severe gales and heavy rain to the UK. Gabrielle itself did not transition into an extratropical storm that affected our region; our weather stayed dominated by regular Atlantic lows.

Gabrielle developed from a tropical wave off the west coast of Africa at about 11°N, 20°W on 4 September 2023, and moved westward across the central Atlantic.
Was Tropical Storm Gabrielle a hurricane?
No – Gabrielle never reached hurricane strength. It remained a tropical storm with peak winds of 45 mph, well below the 74 mph threshold for a Category 1 hurricane.
Did Gabrielle affect the UK’s weather?
No. The system stayed far out in the Atlantic and had no influence on UK conditions. At the time, the UK was under typical autumn low‑pressure systems.
